There are three recognized types of steam sterilization cycles by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI): gravity, pre-vacuum, and steam flush pressure pulse (SFPP). Each cycle has its own approach to removing air from the load during conditioning and may have varying exposure times based on the type of load being sterilized. Both pre-vacuum and SFPP cycles are classified as Dynamic Air Removal cycles by AAMI. While all validated steam sterilization cycles provide effective sterilization when used according to the manufacturer's instructions, dynamic air removal cycles are generally preferred due to their higher efficiency in removing air from the load compared to gravity cycles.

Steam sterilization cycles consist of three phases: conditioning, exposure, and drying. &nbsp;Conditioning involves the removal of air from the load and heating the items to the desired sterilization temperature. &nbsp;This step is crucial as any remaining air can hinder the sterilization process by preventing the sterilant from properly contacting the load items. &nbsp;During the exposure phase, the load is maintained at a specific temperature for a determined duration, ensuring effective sterilization. &nbsp;After exposure, steam is extracted from the chamber, and the load undergoes a drying process to prevent recontamination of the instruments.
In the gravity cycle, conditioning is achieved by introducing steam into the chamber, displacing air, and using gravity to allow the heavier air to exit through the sterilizer drain. &nbsp;As the air removal method is more passive, gravity cycles generally require longer exposure times.
In contrast, the pre-vacuum cycle conditions wrapped loads using a combination of steam pressurizations and chamber evacuations through a mechanical vacuum system. &nbsp;This system enables more efficient air removal, particularly for lumened items. &nbsp;During evacuations, the pressure in the chamber drops below atmospheric levels. &nbsp;However, it is important to note that any leaks in the piping or sterilizer seal can potentially reintroduce air into the chamber.
Overall, both types of cycles provide effective sterilization, but pre-vacuum cycles are generally preferred as they offer more efficient air removal, especially when sterilizing complex instruments with lumens.
