What is Hydrogen Peroxide Sterilization?
Hydrogen peroxide sterilization, also known as hydrogen peroxide gas sterilization, is a low-temperature process commonly used to sterilize heat-sensitive devices. This method involves H2O2 vapor filling the sterilizer chamber and sterilizing exposed device surfaces, making it a preferred choice over alternatives like ethylene oxide sterilization due to its shorter cycle time.
Low-Temperature Sterilization
This process is best suited for heat-sensitive devices that may be damaged by traditional steam sterilization methods. Vaporized hydrogen peroxide (VHP) is often favored over ethylene oxide sterilization systems in healthcare facilities, attributed to its simplicity and declining use of ethylene oxide sterilization systems.
Vaporized Hydrogen Peroxide Sterilization
VHP is known for its user-friendly nature, requiring only power with no need for additional water, steam, or compressed air utilities. Additionally, it does not necessitate ventilation, offering confidence in its non-toxic and environmentally safe attributes.
Hydrogen Peroxide Sterilization Process
The sterilization process involves the conversion of liquid H2O2 into vapor, which fills the chamber, contacts all surfaces, penetrates lumens, and is vacuumed from the chamber after sterilization, converting into water and oxygen.
Hydrogen Peroxide Sterilization Guidelines
Regulatory entities such as the FDA and ISO require sterilizers to adhere to safety and effectiveness standards.
